From NSSF:
Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reported 973,003 checks in September 2008. This figure is a 2.96% increase from the 944,889 reported in September 2007. Adjusted state figures show background checks up 0.82%. Year-to-date reveals a total of 8,472,683 background checks reported by NICS. Background checks are a key economic indicator of firearms industry sales.
Also: Gun Sales Steady Despite Economy
Regardless of these continuing trends, I think it’s clear that gun sales will probably slump a bit for a while here. Though ammo purchases for guns already owned may surge depending upon the election results next month.

I think we have yet to see the peak. If 1994 was any indication, expect a massive surge in buying if Obama gets elected. I will probably buy a few thousand extra rounds just in case.

Jim W: I would agree wholeheartedly, but the economy is really hurting a lot of folks right now and there isn’t as much cash available. We’ll see.

I buy at least 3 guns per year regardless of the economy.
1. Buy one for Christmas.
2. Buy one for my birthday.
3. Buy one for the 4th of July.
Then I usually buy a few at gun shows each year. Looking towards the election and Obama’s/Biden’s voting records, buying guns might be a wise investment.

Yeah, I didn’t say I was going to go out and buy a noveske carbine and a DIAS. But there are a ton of great bargains out there and I think every person has a few cheap EBRs on the wish list. For example, AES-10B’s are still going for under 400 bucks and they are great rifles. The Romaks and PSLs are in the 600-800 dollar range but that is still cheap when you consider what NDM-86es are worth these days.

I’ve been thinking of a Romak, actually. I’ve managed to avoid the 7.62×54 so far, though, and I’m afraid if I give in the floodgates will open…
