High Capacity Magazines

Guns! Guns! Guns!: Assault rifles, high-capacity magazines flying off local shelves following election

In yet another article covering the recent rush on guns and accessories:

Two other local gun shop owners approached by the Odessa American reported similar rushes on guns, especially assault rifles and high-capacity magazines, which are capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

“High-powered assault rifles with high-capacity magazines” is how the story is told. Except, of course, that the weapons aren’t “high-powered,” they aren’t “assault rifles,” and the magazines aren’t “high-capacity.”

The high-cap magazine term is a place where the pro-gun side allowed the other side to frame the debate. 20 and 30-round magazines aren’t “high” capacity, they’re “standard” capacity. But no one, and I mean no one, sees it that way.

Magazines and ammo will be the next battleground.

That’s my belief as well, I stocked up on XD Mags recently for that very reason, and .45 ammo is next… Before Jan. 20th to be sure…

Hmmm…. This all looks familiar. Haven’t we been here before? The Democratic Party has been very good for firearm and ammo manufacturers since the years of Bill Clinton. I still have my wooden case full of 7.69×39 for a gun I never bought. Doh!

Dang! I’m starting to get anxious about Obama trying to take away my guns!…… Hey, how much ARE SKS’s now anyway?

One benefit of the press having demonstrated such strident bias in reporting the recent election is that the public is much more aware that most reporting on ‘hot button’ issues is simply political advocacy. So the improper use of terms like ‘assault rifle’ have less impact and may raise flags signaling that the presentation of a given story is likely being manipulated for affect.

  4. Roger.45 Says:

Gun enthusiasts have been passive in challenging the panic and demonizing terms used by the opposition. Heck, even a mini-gun uses a standard capacity magazine (belt). It just happens to hold about 1000 rounds.

The deck is definitely stacked against us, too. The elitist media, Sarah Brady’s bunch, and the Democrats are powerful foes of the Second Amendment.

The SCOTUS ruling in Heller v. D.C. does not mean very much to the above mentioned groups who selectively choose what laws they respect. Reasonable gun laws? What is reasonable to them is not reasonable to those who believe in the 2A, and have Heller to support their belief.

Never, never, never give up! The Democrats are just wolves in sheep’s clothing and always will be.

It never ceases to amaze me how the MSM portrays “assault rifles”
as being high-powered. By definition, an assault rifle fires
a round that is intermediate between that of a pistol round
and that of a full battle rifle. I’m sorry folks, but if you
think the 5.56mm NATO (M-16) or the 7.65X39 (AK-47) is a “high-powered round” then you live in a far corner of the Twilight Zone.

  6. Don Meaker Says:

here in California our assault rifles are already restricted. of course I compensate by selecting standard power rounds like the .30/06 and 7.62NATO, the .30/40 Krag, and older rifles like the .45/70. Now those are not high power, are they?

And the .44 Army Cap and Ball revolvers are not even classed as firearms. No waiting period, low cost. They are kind of slow to reload…

  7. Glen Wren Says:

It doesn’t but one round to kill. Even a .22 will do it if placed in the right part of the brain.

  8. rosignol Says:

Hey, how much ARE SKS’s now anyway?

    Last I saw, $399 at Big5.

Does anyone else remember back in the late 90s, when you could get a decent SKS for $99?

  9. Matt Groom Says:

Heller V. D.C. won’t prevent the DNC from passing more anti-civil rights laws, but it will put those laws on a fast track towards the supreme court on the grounds of constitutionality. The unconstitutionallity of banning a type of action for aeseteic reasons was specifially mendioned in the Heller decision. I.E. handguns can’t be banned because they are more likely to be used in crime. Ergo, Semi-automatic rifles cannot be banned because they are the weapons of choice of nerdowells and people who are likely to kill politicians, etc.

The banning of standard capacity magazines may be a little trickier to defend on constitutional grounds in individual states, but let us not forget what happened to the Dems the last time they controlled the House, the Senate, most of the Gubernatorial seats, and the White House and they began to push for Arms Prohibition. They lost their majories across the country. This is a political suicide issue for the dems, and most of them know it. Especially the Blue Dogs. It is up to us to make sure that they know what will happen to their precarious majority during the next election if they pass even one unpatiotic law, like a new tax on ammo.

What kind of assault rifle and/or hand-gun would you recommend. I’m jumping on this band wagon and getting me some self-defense while I can. Once Obama is in office I won’t have that chance.

Dan C., who said anyone recommends an assault rifle. I suspect this is a liberal charade posed to invite statements you view damning from the unwary.

In the late 80’s, $59.95 was reasonable for good used ones. They were also available by the case, with accessories. Norinco AKs, $154. M-43 ammo? they were giving it away. $40 the case. Then Stockton…

  15. Tophe Says:

The danger of so called “assault weapons” is a farce. Stockton brought all this on… a single incident, in which over a hundred rounds were fired out of an AK clone and something like five children were killed.

Look at the Virginia Tech massacre, the largest case of mass murder in American history. The assailant used two small calibur handguns to kill over thirty people.

It’s not the weapons that are the issue. We should just ban lunatics. It’d have about the same long term effect.
