Happened across this on Marines.mil:

The shell from a hunter's rifle lies near the one of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton's four lakes, most likley hunting duck or small game, Nov. 23.
A couple of comments about the caption:
- I don’t know many people who hunt duck with 5.56 (.223)
- Those appear to be blanks
See Pendleton: Home of the avid hunter for more.

[...] Murdoc finds an article about hunting at Camp Pendleton, but the most interesting part of the story is a related photo and caption. Apparently members of our military are so good that they can shoot ducks with .223 blanks. [...]

[...] No matter how good a shot your typical Marine is, I’m betting they didn’t hit anything with these. [...]

Am I the only person that knows how to kill things with blanks? It’s easier than you think and small game hunting with them happens all the time while deployed in the field

I thought you would mention something about picking up their brass.

They normally would…the ammo we used in Quantoco for our ROTC BRM were all reloaded, so they tell us.

Gah, early morning and no PT makes me a dull boy. Spelling error on Quantico.

Blanks. Those blanks are real weak – they won’t cycle the bolt without a blank firing adaptor attached to the end of the barrel.
Brass gets policed up at the range. If they are in a running firefight during an exercise – not so much.

Duck hunting with rifle grenades?

Rifle grenades? Nobody has used them in about 35 years!

Shelby…
Funny post! But in chasing it a bit, I went to Marines.mil and there found a wonderful photo of our President making an unscheduled photo op with two recovering Marines who were wounded in combat. As the op was ending, Bush kissed each of the men on the top of the head in obvious respect and affection.
They can say what they want about the man, he is more than the Commander-In-Chief–he is a soldier’s president from his very soul.

[...] GunPundit stumbled across a photo at Marines.mil with a caption that suggests that some Marines are hunting ducks with 5.56mm NATO rounds and/or 5.56mm blanks. [...]

Bram, clearing out old stock?
December 12th, 2008 at 4:13 am
@Bram
Drop in a cleaning rod tip, and then the blank… its good out to around 100 meters. I put one through the door of a deuce and a half from about 50 meters and it hit where I aimed.
So yeah while the picture is funny-stupid…
The blank can be used to kill or maim and as all firearm related items should be handled with care.
And we NEVER policed up our blank brass out in the field, since it wasn’t required by our command (1982 – 1989).

I was being facetious, but it didn’t look like a range picture or the remains of a firefight, so I figured the brass would be picked up to recycle or just to keep someone that screwed up busy.
I always knew when I pissed off the Msgt because the next morning I was on butt (cigarette!) detail.

Gordon: If bush cares so much about the troops, he would insure 1) that they don’t have to spend one hour more than is necessary in the field and 2) that ALL those who serve get the support they need, medically and physically upon their release.
Don’t believe the staged photo ops. His actions, taken as a whole, tell a much different story. Bush HATES the troops.

man who ever posted this is about retarded their shooting ducks with hope from the looks of it
February 4th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I hope they aren’t shooting ducks with rifles, not only is it illegal but completely unethical.
