JROTC Air Guns = ‘Mixed message being given to youths about guns and violence’
February 1st, 2009
Via Say Uncle comes this absurd tale:
A group that is, and I am not making this up, protesting that ROTC offers arms training.
Here is a sampling of the group’s messages:
Military science courses (i.e., JROTC) are now taught in most San Diego City high schools. They are not required to include weapons training, yet many of them have high-powered pellet gun ranges on school grounds. This is despite the school district’s zero-tolerance weapons policy and community efforts to teach young people NOT to use weapons.
We’ve been arguing for years and years that assault rifles and civilian guns modeled on them are not “high-powered.” Now we’re faced with “high-powered pellet guns.”
They use pellet bullets but those bullets still can hurt someone
If “still can hurt someone” is the standard, pencils and pens are right out. Right?
- Violence should be left off campus
- Against zero tolerance policy
- School Shootings
- Using what you learn in JROTC can be used in ways that affect the community
The above items are from a PowerPoint presentation. I can just imagine what the discussion points are for these items. Violence? School shootings? They are reaching badly.
Students that can’t handle firearms can make a big mistake and do something they might regret
So the answer is not to teach anyone how to handle firearms.
They’ve also got a couple of slides (apparently) showing a number of JROTC students, titled “Another issue we have w/ JROTC” and “Who’s missing in these images?” None of the pictured students are white, and I imagine that’s what they’re getting at. Are they saying that no white students are enrolled in JROTC in the San Diego school system? Again, I’d sure love to see the discussion points for these slides.
UPDATE: Sebastian noticed that they list The Onion in their “Related Information” section. You can’t make this stuff up.

Obviously they are going to be chased out of the schools to private ranges – which is probably better for the shooters anyhow since they can move up to .22′s.
The coaches at my club will brag for hours about their many former youth students at different universities on shooting scholarships.

Hey Tardo,
Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. Children have been using guns since guns were first invented. So what if they learn gun safety in high school? At least they are LEARNING GUN SAFETY and WEAPONS HANDLING! These kids are our future. What message of violence is weapons safety teaching? If that is the case then abandon driving for everyone under 30 and over 50 because a car is just as dangerous. Study on your information before you flap your gums. Either way whichever of these kids joing the military at 17-18 they are going to play with weapons far bigger and powerful than a pellet gun. I joined the Marine Corps at 17. I was playing with M16s before my 18th bday. Think outside the box

Ignorance breeds stupidity this school and the jrotc program is trying to educate young people on how to safely use firearms and these gun control people are trying to stop them from being educted I think they are just being hypocrites .I am a 4-h shooting sports coach and we are going to teach kids from 9 to 18 to shoot pellet guns 22 rifles and deer rifles. So get a clue everybody who wants to learnhow to shoot does not want to use it for violence.

For the most part, I agree with what you are stating here.
