I’ll never understand the people who hike deep deep into someplace like Yellowstone with no means to protect themselves.
Guns are tools. You carry a tent to keep you out of the rain. You packed a sleeping bag to keep you warm. You’re bringing in food to eat, likely as not a camp stove and fuel to heat that food. You have a flashlight to see in the dark, and probably a GPS to find your way. And don’t forget a decent first aid kit.
Every one of those items is a tool (ok, food is not a tool but you get the point) to help you leverage your knowledge into a decent shot at surviving your trip. How does it make sense not to include means of self protection when putting yourself at the mercy of nature?
