Pick 5 and Only 5

May 1st, 2009

Over at The Range Officer, the Human Events gun blog, Mike wants to know which guns you’d own if you could only have five.

Off the top of my head, here’s Murdoc’s list:

  • .22 Rifle – 10/22, probably
  • .22 Handgun – Like my Ruger MkII
  • .40 Handgun – I’m happy with my FNP-40
  • 5.56 AR – Carbine length with tacticoolness attached
  • 12 gauge pump shotgun – good for all sorts of stuff

Now, there are obviously all sorts of other possibilities with very good reasons. Such as a .45 instead of a .40. Or a revolver. Or a larger-caliber rifle.

A large part of the equation is what you want these five guns to be able to do. In a survivalist scenario, I might be tempted to choose an AK or an M1 Carbine. If I hunted I’d certainly want a full-sized rifle. The possibilities are endless.

    My personal picks:
    .22 Rifle – yes
    .22 Handgun – yes
    .40 S&W handgun – yes
    12 Ga shotgun – yes
Substitute – long range rifle (M1, Mosin-Nagant, etc) for CQB carbine.
Or – why limit to 5. Choose 6, have both rifles.

I would swap out the .22 rifle with a .22 conversion kit for my AR-15 (hey, it is not a rifle by the ATF’s definition) and fill that slot with something long-range and powerful (and probably chambered in .308).

And my handgun would be a 9mm. But that is about it.

  3. Nadnerbus Says:

I’ve already got the weapons that I would want, just need the afore mentioned .22 AR conversion.

AR with plenty of mags and ammo, in 5.56
    9mm semi auto
    .22 conversion for the AR.
    12 gage pump.
M1A in 308. But I would scope it out and accurize it for longer range work.

I figure that covers everything from very close range to reasonably long ranges (for my skill level anyway), along with a mix of calibers that can be adapted to different situations.

Forgot to mention that my AR is California Neutered, so it would need some work for a SHTF scenario. But if things got bad, I think the first thing I’d do is get out of this state.

  5. Jason Says:

    .22 rifle 10/22
    .45 handgun 1911
    12ga shotgun 870 pump
    5.56 AR-15
    .308 rifle AR-10

  6. Tomcatshanger Says:

    .45 handgun – Glock 30 w/ .22 conversion kit
.45 handgun – Glock 21 (two is one, one is none)
    .45 carbine – Suppressed .45 ACP AR-15
    5.56 rifle – 20″ gov profile AR-15 w/ .22 conversion kit
    5.56 rifle – 16″ disapator stile AR-15, shares .22 conversion kit

that gives me two .22 conversion kits, three .45 ACP firearms, two 5.56 firearms, and parts interchangeability between both handguns and both 5.56 rifles and some parts for the .45 carbine.

This works pretty well in my mind.

    My list:

A .22LR Rifle, either a Marlin 60 or a 10/22. A .22LR pistol is good for plinkin’ and for practice, but a .22 rifle can splatter varmits at longer ranges and put small game on the table.

An AR-15. Personal protection and good for medium-sized game.

A scoped bolt-action rifle in .308 or better, to reach out and touch someone at long (300+ yards) ranges and take down big game.

A small-ish 9mm pistol like a CZ PCR (I hate Glocks) for daily carry and self-defence. If not a 9mm auto, then a small .357/.38 revolver.

A 20 gauge pump shotgun, like a Remington 870. Good for protection, sport and game birds.

  8. Ryan Says:

I would loose the 10-22 and replace it with my great grand fathers 30-40 Krag. I can hit anything I can see (small game and such) with the Ruger Mark III and it is lighter to carry then the 10-22. I think Tomcatshanger wins for most variety of weapons with the least ammo differences.
