Hello Kitty stickers are part of the latest danger to police officers nationwide

February 11th, 2008

I did not make that headline up. Really.

Via Sharp As A Marble comes this amazing story which begins

Automatic weapons painted pink and covered in Hello Kitty and flower stickers are an example of a growing threat - real guns painted to look like toys, according to a notice recently circulated among officers at the Gainesville Police Department.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. First two words are just plain wrong. These ARs are NOT automatic weapons.

Hello Kitty AR - California Legal

This is a California legal firearm. Last time I looked, automatic weapons were not legal in California. Heck, we’re lucky guns that shoot bullets at all are legal in California.

I wonder what the Gainesville Police Department thinks about the Bloomberg Collection of handguns from Lauer Custom Weaponry:

DuraCoat Bloomberg Handguns

Lauer created this line after New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said that DuraCoat should be outlawed in the city.

I understand that police often have to make very important decisions in a split second. And I will almost always side with the police officer as long as the law is on his side, even if he shoots someone who didn’t need to get shot.

But how many police officers are shot by law-abiding citizens with legally-owned firearms compared to criminals with illegal weapons? Does someone really think that passing a law preventing me from putting a cartoon sticker on my weapon is going to help anyone? Let alone that it’s a rational law in the first place?
