More on the State Trooper who Stopped the Ambulance
Dashboard video of the incident has been released:
Also, lots of comments here.

That person(so called highway patrol officer) should not be authorized to be anything but a prison inmate.
A professional must remain a professional even in the face of a stressful situation. The purpose of law enforcement training is to ensure that situations are not escalated un-necessarily. Even if the driver had flipped the officer a “hand gesture” the officer’s swearing, and refusal to listen to the calm voice of the EMT who came from the back of the ambulace demonstrates either (a) poor training of the officer; or (b) an officer who has little or no control over his emotions, and who desperately needs counseling, additional training, and a desk job, until he can deal with an unpredictable public and not escalate what should be a simple situation for him to resolve. The officer felt disrespected, and he let his ego get involved. The officer was angry because the EMT Drivers were not in submission to his gun, his uniform, and his overall authority. The officer’s irate tone, his general demeanor and his attitude was clearly not in proportion to the incident.
If the Trooper used his common sense, he would know there was a patient in the back of the ambulance when the EMT exited from the back. They don’t just ride back there for the fun of it. That aside, he could’ve just asked if they were transporting a patient before he went off on the driver. I feel the Trooper was out of line and none of this would’ve happened if he would’ve used his good judgement and common sense.
Why the h?ll is he on PAID leave? It will also be a cold day in h?ll
before I or any of my family members travel through Oklahoma again. Why has his partner not been put on leave, he did nothing to help the situation except maybe to exacerbate it. And when did it illeagal to flip someone off, this guy should be in prison for obstruction an ambulance which IS against the law.
Once again a show of disrespect for the “working” class person. The state trooper is more like a STORM trooper, ridiculous, fire his ass and no more jobs with AUTHORITY for him !
Wow.. It sure is amazing to see how all the cop hating retards come out of the woodwork. Your obvious bias and tainted opinions of this ONE cops actions are just so ridiculous.
1. The trooper very well SHOULD have handled the situation in a more professional manner.
2. The trooper was running lights and sirens so the Ambulance should have yielded the right of way. ALL vehicles are required by law to yield to emergency vehicles traveling with it’s emergency signals on. For yor back woods rednecks that means, even cops not driving with their woo woo’s on have to yeild to ANY emergency vehicle with their Woo woo’s on. Same goes for the Ambulance crew. Just because thier was a patient in the back does not give the ambulance free reign. same goes for cops. If the patient was in a true life threating emergency the ambulance crew SHOULD have been transporting with lights and sirens on.
So the trooper was in his right to pull over the driver of the Ambulance for failing to yield. But DID act like a complete jack ASS on scene.
The Paramedic is right. He has an obligation to care for the patient first. He was also standing up for his partner. If there was an issue the trooper should have waited until the patient was released from the ambulance, not on the side of the road in front of the patient and family. I have been a paramedic for 10 years and have the utmost respect for law enforcement and have thanked the countless times for their assistance. This was wrong and the trooper is lucky to get his arm back in one peice. Anger management would be a good start.
I don’t know what channel Jason was watching, but clearly according to the video, the ambulance could not pull over any sooner than it did due to the car parked on the shoulder of the road. As soon as it was safe to do so, he pulled over out of the way. No more Red Bull or steroids for that state trooper! And someone tell his wife to stop holding out on him so he won’t be so ornery next time!
Ummm, hey, here’s a newsflash, “Jason”: most people hate cops because they are almost ALWAYS total jerks that flaunt and abuse their power just because they can. Just because you’re a police officer doesn’t mean you don’t have to treat people with respect. Where does it say that in any of the laws?? That cops get to do whatever they please, such as the disgusting evidence of this cop’s completely unprofessional and ridiculous behavior in pulling over an AMBULANCE, for God’s sake??? Ugh. Sorry, cops deserve to be hated for their holier-than-thou attitude especially considering most of the patrol cops (like this one) are on an elementary school level intellectually.
WOW Tess, Sounds like you had a run in with a local law Enforcement officer that didn’t go to well for you. AGAIN if you read me earlier post I was very clear to state that, this ONE cop was very unprofessional. But your saying ALL cops are this way. A very negative, mis-informed and very wrong statement. There are well over a half a million Law Enforcement officer’s in this country, I doubt very seriously that you know or have come across even 1% of them……
“cop hating retards” and what shall we call you? I don’t hate cops, and I’m sure none of these other people do.
This guy was so far out of line it’s ridiculous! First of all watching the video the ambulance waited to swerve around the car on the right…he wasn’t blocking the man for 20 minutes…not to mention where is this target the cop is chasing down? If he had somewhere he had to be then why in goodness name would he take the time to chase down the ambulance.
He had to know someone was in the back due to the EMT stepping out of the back, they don’t just hang back there! Second of all the man in the back got out and tried to have a civil conversation with the cop, and he just kept cursing and running his mouth. This was a dick measuring contest! He got out to abuse his power and should be fired over the matter, as should his partner who contributed to the matter! What would have you done if it were one of you family members in the back of the ambulance?? Imagine your parents, or child in the back and watching this cop do this. With complete disregard to the patient in the back!
As for your redneck comment…I live in one of the biggest cities in the world! I assure you couldnt be further from the truth! Grow up!
So, the question is what about the call for back-up the officer was responding to? More important to give someone a piece of his mind and a ticket than help his fellow officer in need of assistance? Sounds like road rage to me.
So “Me”, did you miss the part where I clearly said this ONE cop was unprofessional… And I said all the cop hating retards, because if you go back thru the post and read them. Thats exactly whats being put out there. I understand the whole “one bad apple BS” but thats exactly BS. ALL cops do not act like that.
Please watch the full dash cam video. Complete dash footage
This shows the cop running up on the ambulance quite quickly, the ambulance passing one car that has pulled off to the shoulder, which the ambulance driver may very well have thought was done for him. Who knows if the ambulance driver had even seen the police cruiser yet? The ambulance pulls to the side within seconds after that, presumably having seen the cruiser at that point. The cop speeds by, says something snide about checking their mirrors.
Cop pulls up to some sort of scene, looks like a convenience store or something. Local cops seem to be on top of the situation, so after a mater of seconds, he reverses, pulls out, and proceeds to chase down the ambulance. Then everything else that people are already familiar with transpires.
I don’t give a rat’s ass about “running code” or the cop’s lawful right to pull over the ambulance. Part of being a law enforcement officer is having good discretion in when to use your authority. Just because you have the legal right to taze someone doesn’t mean it is the right course of action. Just because you are legally allowed to pull over an ambulance if its not running lights and siren, for simply not pulling over within four seconds, even if the officer perceived an obscene gesture, does not mean that he should.
Its not a cop hating issue. Its a hatred of tyranny thread. A lot of law enforcement in this country seems to see itself as being in charge, not just there to “protect and serve.” When the body politic and the law enforcement arm of the government start seeing themselves on opposing teams, there is going to be serious trouble down the road.
By “ALL” do you mean you?? Well calling people names, and making redneck comments sure dont make you seem much different.
No I am not a Law enforcement Officer, But I have had the pleasure of knowing one of the finest COPS if not man you could imagine. My father served his community for 15 years before he made the ultimate sacrafice. I serve my country in other ways. I do have friends that are cops. So again read all the postings and make your decision as to what type of people are posting. It’s very clear to see…..
A majority of the post are nothing but a way to take a cheap shot at law enforcement officer’s for one reason or another. maybe you got a ticket you didn’t think you deserved or WHATEVER….a vast majority of the Law Enforcement Officer’s out there are hard working dedicated men and women serving thier communities. I’m sure in your line of work (what ever that may be), you have A-holes that make you and your other co-workers look bad is that fair or right to be judged by what others do or don’t do……
Jason,
You are about a ignorant fool. You really believe Law Enforcement is our savior. Ya, right. make them fools get a degree in criminology first and actually know a little about what they supposed to be doin. Any fool can b a cop. They just happen to be the kids that got beat up in school. Some cops are truly great like you say, too bad they are rare commodities. The worst cops are the ones that been pulling traffic duty all their life cause thats all their worth is a radar gun.
So when your turn comes Jason. And that cop throws a choke hold on you. remember he is their to help you… Get a clue KID…..
Do you love your freedom thank a Soldier….
Do you love being safe a night Thank a Cop……..
Thank you to every Soldier and Law Enforcement Officer. Every day I wake up free to do my daily duties….everyday you wake up and go to work you place your life in harms way for me. and every other person posting on this site..even if they hate you and don’t respect what you do. You do it anyway….THANK YOU
It is an example of a man who should not be allowed to have a posistion of authority over other people..
The Trooper is a perfect example of the frustrated high school bully who now has a weapon and a badge and arrest powers.
I do not care if he is 00000.1 % as some people have found out it only takes one of them to shoot or taser you to death.
His partner did nothing to stop it..
Common sense did not apply in this case. both of them should not be allowed to ever have that knid of power..
A law Enforcement Officer like this one frightens me far more than any terroist.. The terroist can only kill me.. The Law Enforcement Officer can arrest and charge and testify – Lie in court..
Sometimes it would pay to use ones head for something other then a hat rack. This tropper needs to be taken down a few notches. What a sorry display of poor judgement.
EngradgedCOP
your name say’s it all…………get a clue huh
I’ve been a cop in a major metropolitan police force for 28 years, 24 of those on the street. Clearly this was not this trooper’s finest hour. His actions reflect poorly on him and on the entire state. They are not typical however. Most officers do not jump out and start yelling at someone as he did. His actions were not only improper but unsafe, as at one point in the video it looks like the crowd is getting ready to deal him an ass-whooping.
Please, though can we have just one Internet debate about an officer’s actions and not bring up the cliches that either he got beat up in grade school or was a school bully. The kid that got beat up on the playground in grade school is now in Congress jacking up your taxes as sweet revenge. The school bully is dead or in prison. Neither of them are cops. Please find a new insult.
Oh, yeah and give up the lie in court thing. Court is about presentation, not truth and if you believe any different then you haven’t seen many trials. The content of what is said is always less important than how it is said. That’s not defending lying. There are just tons of rules concerning court testimony and none of them exist to make it easier to get at the truth.
this is exactly why I have a camera in my car, 4 feilds of view, button next to my rocker fosgate amp turns on recorder. most of this is used to lowere my ins. rates and prevent any frivaliuos law suites in the case of an accident. the recorder is for “never goanna make detective” cops, i have used it once in court. the officer was not as rude and never abusive, but none the less stunned when i presented it as evidence!!!! case dismissed weeeeeeeeeee. dont say anything, answer all questions, keep hands on steering wheel, ask to retrieve lic.reg.paperwork and announce clearly where they are. if this is done your rights outway his curiosty. gl hagda
Trooper needed to keep in mind based on his choosen profession he may need that very paramedic to treat his injuries, professionalism over ego any day. Basic human dignaty was needed.
All I have to say is “UNBELIEVABLE”!! It is very scary to see this and thank goodness the woman in the ambulance is ok. To be honest, this video made me sick to my stomach. The thought that someone can overuse his authority due to their personal rage and anyone can fall prey to their over the top egos sickens me. Great role model! I hope the police officer realizes he did make a terrible mistake and can publicly admit to it.
typical cop, thinks he walks on water, last person i’d ever call for help would be a cop!!!
I am a former Navy combat medic. When you take an oath to care for people, your priorities about certain things change. The lead EMT should be commended for his cool deameanor and his concern seemed to be for his patient, which in a situation like this they still come first. As a Navy corpsman I learned about continuing to do your job during impossible working conditions, in combat you don’t just get to yell “time out” and go freshen up a bit, so I think the medics did just fine except for one thing. The ambulance driver probably should share some of the responsibility for this P.R. disaster because that did seem to spark the trooper. As far as the troopers are concerened, well I don’t think they are going to be invited to do any public service announcements.
fire his butt…………it looks as if it was redneckville is its finest. no excuse…oklahoma highway patrol will suffer and look like a bunch of stupid rednecks. fire him, don’t let him quit because they probably will have to pay his retirement……
All I have to say is the guy had his blood up and wasn’t thinking. We’ve all been in situations like that…”he who is without sin and all that…” To all those that are cop bashing, next time you have your huse broken into in the middle of the night or your daughter raped and beaten, call a crackhead and see how much help or justice you get.
OMG , It is sad to say but Cops now a day think they are God.
I hope he gets fired . And lets all hope he never needs an Amulance.lol
Two of the sheriff’s deputies I work with were watching the entire dashboard camera video on bing.com (not sure the deputies looked it up). The dashboard shows this offcer responding “code” to back up another officer. He comes up very quickly on the ambulance driving “normal traffic”. The ambulance drives to the left around a parked vehicle, then immediately yeilds the right of way to the officer. The officer arrives at a convenience store and you can hear the other officers advise that they are secure. The officer leaves the scene and tracks down the ambulance and pulls it over. The video also does not show the entire interaction between the officer and the paramedic. The paramedic does inform the officer more than once that they are transporting a patient in the ambulance. The officer continues to curse at the driver because it took him too long to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle (in most states responding “code” to an incident you are only requesting the right of way it is not given until the vehicle pulls over).
This officer should have acted with a little more discretion in this scenario. As we watched this video the sherif’s deputies stated that the best course of action would have been to find out where the ambulance was headed and meet them at the hospital. This large scene could have been avoided by talking to the crew after patient care was transfered to the hospital staff. I work with state police, county deputies, and local law enforcement officers. My father was an officer for 15 years until cancer ended his career. It all boils down to letting the heat of the moment dictate the corse of action. But lets not chastise all officers because of the actions of one individual. All the officer I work with try to approach the job professionally even though facing high stress and danger protecting us. They are all human too and I am just going to chalk it up to another human being that was having a bad, hopefully he learns something from this incident before returning to work.
Matt: Here’s hoping you end up under the knife of a surgeon who’s “just having a bad day and will learn something from all this”.
not a fair comparison? Actually, it isn’t: we give surgeons LESS latitude to screw up and destroy the lives they’re supposed to protect than we do cops.
Want to end cop bashing? GET RID OF BAD COPS. If it was possible to do this within the departments, there would be no cop bashing.
That is absolutely fucking rediculous!!! I watched the Youtube video. The patient was screaming in pain for someone to help her. The guy that was taking the video was trying to get his mother to the hospital asap. Highway patrolman should be fired.
all i have to say to jason’s post about thanking acop for being safe at night, what a fucking joke. i thank the framers of the constitution and the second amendment. i feel safe at night because I have taken every precaution to guard MYSELF. not only from those in our society that would do me harm like criminal, but also with knowledge of my rights and the understanding cops don’t protect us. they show up to help clean up when everything has went down. jason my friend crime happens in seconds, police response time is measured in minutes, or in a lot of cases hours. how do you protect me when you ain’t even there? i am truely sorry for your loss of your father, but his death odes not make him or his co horts heros. get over it, we’ve all had loss in our lives and we ae still able to seperate our feels and see abuse for what it is.
Derek and Tom Sawyer here have a more level headed approach to this issue than a lot of the others here. Cops are human too, and highly publicized displays like this do not mean they are all like that. I have been fired from a job for losing my temper and breaking a piece of company property out of frustration and rage. I still feel like I was getting fucked by that company, but my lack of control was not excusable. Same thing here, and even more so. A public apology and a gesture of reparation would go a long way to diffusing this situation. But that is where the problem with police comes in. The ranks always close, and the officer is always given every benefit of the doubt, and then some, a courtesy that is rarely extended to the same degree as the rest of us. I only wish I had the same degree of protection from the “customers” in the jobs I have had.
I do want to say thank you to the officers out there that do their job, and do it well and fairly. My uncle was a sheriff, and by all accounts a good one. He resisted ticket quotas, and finally retired early after an unwillingness to play department politics and PC games, instead of just doing his job well. I know there a lot of cops out there like that, and I do thank you.
Wow—what a dick.
I hear what Jason is saying—but you are coming off as a self righteous prick. I know most of the cops have good intentions when they join an P.D.—most become real A-holes. Not the minority of them–Most. I worked in a prison for 10 years, and have dealt with tons of Cops, Staties and C.O.’s—the power trip and just the crappy attitude is amazing. I don’t like cops, most people don’t—get over it. This guy should be pistol whipped behind the shed. Just because he is a cop–he gets away with that, then wants to grip the guy up, if that was joe citizen—he would be toothless on the side of the road. Instead he has his partner choking the damn ambulance guy. That dept. should be ashamed to have that video released—paid leave–what a friggin joke. Before you ask, since you sound like a cop or a cop lover—I have had no bad experiences/run-ins with cops that make me feel this way—just the way I am. I hate Lawyers, Politicians, and Organized religion too—-have a nice day
Apparently this guy never saw the video of the cop in Texas who stopped the football player transporting his dying mother-in-law to the hospital. Please require that incident as a training video nationally for all law enforcement. Also, law enforcement displays a tendency in their hiring practices to look favorable on ex-military personnel. BIG MISTAKE. Military personnel are trained to see “enemy combatants”. This guy stops the ambulance and immediately approaches the situation seeing “the enemy” instead of u.s. citizens. You can hear that in his voice and definitely observe it in his actions. HE’S READY FOR A FIGHT!! He’s just not rational, even though the guy who got out of the back of the ambulance did approach him rationally. How else could someone feel justified exhibiting this kind of stupid behavior and on video no less! The trooper should quit voluntarily and join the professional wrestling circuit. And please stop the practice of allowing officer`s spouses and girlfriends to ride in patrol cars because EVERY STOP BECOMES “SHOWTIME”!!!!!!
Trooper Daniel Martin should not be a Police man, and Ive read his wife was in the Police cruiser at the time. Why was she in there?
The Governor of Oklahoma should be accountable for this brutality bya Police man.
Trooper should lose his job, maybe he could get a part time job driving for the ambulance crew
i am an ex-emt in colorado let me tell you something if i am on a call and there is a patient in my truck #1 i would not have pulled over till i got to the hospital #2 that trooper would have been talking to me as i was a sup. in my truck also as i stepped out of the truck i would have advised the officer that i was transporting a patient and he would have to wait to deal with his problem if he interfered i would have had him arrested and detained for immpeading my duties…i am e.m.t. in an accident situation i am the final call if you are told and dont not do as i ask you will be arrested..period that officer had no right and even less of a leg to stand on after he screamed at the sup. and cursed at him just because a person wears a badge THEY ARE NOT GOD!! get this guy out of the force he does not belong there. hes gonna get someone hurt maybe even himself…..
Oklahoma will be a lot safer if they fire this hostile idiot. He can go back to Iraq and be hostile for a little longer if the military will take him back.
HD
Well I watched the video several times. As has been stated before the ambulance could not pull over immediately due to the obstruction on the shoulder. He did pull over as soon as he could.Fact! The video shows it.However, I could not see where there was a hand gesture given to the officer.Let’s say that there was a hand gesture given. After the ambulance was stopped and Mr. White explained that they had a person in transport to a medical facility. The trooper should have asked Mr. White as to what medical facility they where enroute too and that he had an issue to deal with on the driver’s actions. And that he would deal with the driver at the medical facility not on the side of the highway.Professionalism, lack of clarity for the situation at hand, lack of respect for other professional people, abusive language and force and a total disrespect for the public and the person who needed medical help where not in the minds of cooler heads here. What would have happened if the patient’s condition worsened while the pushing and shoving match was going on.Then someone would be facing a lawsuit!
How sad. What a shame. He should get fired. If he has a lawyer than the two paramedics and the patient should have lawyers. I would really be upset if that was my mother, father or child being transported and they died. That bully cop should be very thankful that patient was okay. If he was in another job and with that attitude he would be in the unemployment line. As criminals are getting stupid, Cops are getting stupider. My Lord, look at what we have been seeing lately about cop behaviors. Slap a badge on them and they think they are above God. TSA agents included. I view tapes and when citizen respond back – bang – before you know it two, three cops are on top of the handcuffed citizen. They throw them on the ground, kick them like rag dolls, pull their hair, punch them, beat them with their sticks. Come on, give me a BREAK! Two, three against one. You can’t tell me that that handcuffed citizen is dangerous when you guys are on your feet, with guns! I agree with whoever said “we are not the terrorist” I also agree with Mr. Davis. “He can go back to Iraq and be hostile for a little longer if the military will take him back.” This bully cop needs debriefing time out. I have family who came back from Iraq and they are not the same family. Why did this guy get or go back to police work? He and his lawyer are going to use this as an excuse for his behavior. Mark, mark, mark my words. Before I’m accuse of being a cop hater. I know many, many good cops, but I also know lying cops, cheating cops, thieving cops, lazy cops, spouse/child abusing cops, pot smoking cops, all types. Why is it the public see and experience these bad cops and the Chief of Police and Mayor don’t. Yes, they are brothers and they back and defend each other, but many of them know the bad cops and don’t say a word. Like we have crime stoppers, they within the Police departments should have cops stoppers. Also, if it is true this cop had a ride along (his wife) that should be stopped. He is there to do a job not visit or hanky panky. I lived way out of city limits. I was in my car driving a bit fast transporting a very sick person. I had lights behind me. This police officer pulled next to me saying “pull over” I yelled out emergency to the hospital. He said, follow me and got in front of me. He was going faster that I wanted to go, but I was right behind him. At the hospital I told him he was way too fast, but that was the only way I could go through red light intersections. My patient was serious and admitted. That was a good police man. Many years ago when I was pregnant I was on the road driving and my water broke. I rushed a bit above speed limit with caution to get to the hospital. I saw red lights behind me, so I pulled over thinking he would escort me or call an ambulance. The idiot cop seeing that I was so pregnant and about to deliver. I told him what had happened but he kept me there parked for a good 20 minutes while he was in his car with my drivers license. I was crying and in pain debating to just go, but I was afraid I would be a victim and get pulled or drag out of my car where he’d hurt my baby. He gave me a speeding ticket. I was not in good shape when I got to the emergency room. They did an emergency C/Section. Later I showed my Doctor the ticket. She couldn’t believe it. She said, bastards! She ripped the ticket and reported him to his Superior. NOW, that is a bad bully cop… All you good cops need to weed out these bad bully cops. If not, you all also get a bad rap!
Mmmm,, I have observed this a few times and read all the reviews. The officer is right and wrong. All of you have missed the technical jargon also. The law states “Failure to yield to an Emergency vehicle”. Who has the pending emergency? An ambulance (that cares or transports really sick or life threatened patients) or police officer (going to a life threatening appointment)? But again this is a Young Officer with his interpretation of the law and his superiors covering their As..’s. It is all in the LEGAL Wording. And a supposed gesture of GIVING THE BIRD RULE is not a law in Texas at least but have not finished researching in Oklahoma. Point, If this Officer is making these type of decisions on duty for one of the highest Positions of power in law enforcement in Oklahoma (someone appointed him and How Many Others) then you should consider who you voted for and their Decision making process also. This kind of treatment of citizens which All of us are, will eventually cause more Unrest and more resistance which could get alot worse if not corrected.
This trooper absolutly needs to loose his job. No if ands or buts about it. He not only endangered his life the troopers lives and the patients well being. He was rude, disrepectfull, i seen no reason for him to be yelling at the paramedic in charge who was not combative, or rude, but just letting him know he was in charge of the ambulance, and maybe if the officer would of let the man in charge talk, he would of known there was a patient in the ambulance. Our tax dollars pay this mans salery for him to get out and berate us, be disrespectful, had no business pulling over or passing and ambulance to find out what was going on. When and ambulance is in high speed we all know what is going on, he should not of been tailgating the driver, or passing the driver, he should in fact just of left the ambulance alone all together used his radio to see if he could assist the driver maybe but certainly not try to pass and ambulance at high speed. This guy needs to loose his badge. If i were the driver i would of flipped him off as well probably if i were trying to get a patient in route and he was playing games. The trooper was un professional and put everyone at risk. The black guy should of beat his ass.
Clearly this officer should be dismissed from the department. Unfortunately he just gets a paid vacation on our dime. Our Country is being turned into a police state to protect the scum that are selling us out and they want people like this who are willing to and are trained to put us in our place. All you shocked and outraged citizens are only getting what you voted for or failed to vote for. Police do not protect and serve they are hired to raise revenue and protect the status quo. Get used to it, it’s only going to get worse as we lose more freedoms.
Jason,in his shrill defense of police, appears to have little knowledge of laws.Traffic is supposed to yeild for emergency vehicles, but not until it is safe to do so.And no,Jason, the police aren’t protecting you while you sleep, unless you are paying them to camp at your door.Police have no legal obligation to protect the public. If they choose so,police can stand around and watch someone get murdered and not do anything to stop it,and legally they are fine. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled police aren’t obligated to protect anyone. The fact of the matter is,police are revenue generators for the cities/counties/states they work for.The web has hundreds of videos of “isolated incidents” of law enforcement abuse posted.Out of control police aren’t anything new,it’s just that in the video age proof of the abuses confirm it,and police can’t group up behind the thin blue line to protect each other with lies.
