Wizbang solution for ‘Gun-Free Zones’

Coming to a classroom near you?

Jay Tea, who wrote about so-called gun-free zones last week, has an idea to make them actually gun-free. He notes that colleges won’t have an easy time ensuring the safety that they imply exists, but he thinks it can be done.

Luckily, we don’t have to start from scratch — a lot of the preparatory R&D has already been done for us.

All we need to do is take the existing plans for maximum security prisons and convert them to college campuses.

If you’re going to declare a zone “gun-free,” you had better put some effort into making it gun-free.

As usual, though, the problem of criminals doing illegal things with often illegal guns is addressed by restricting the upstanding citizens who don’t commit crimes and want to carry legal guns.

As I noted last month when MSNBC.com commentator Chris Matthews said the everyone should be disarmed and that everyone should submit to physical checks “like they do getting on airplanes.”

I guess the first problem is that Matthews thinks that people walking down the street “carrying a concealed weapon without a license” is “wacky” and that his (presumably non-wacky) solution is to get licensed weapons off the street.

Right? That’s what gun control is. It’s the control of legal weapons. Matthews is arguing on national television that the solution to unlicensed concealed guns on the street is the elimination of licensed concealed guns.

Wacky.

I always thought it would be better to just make everyone walk around naked. That way there would be no way to ‘conceal’ anything but a very small weapon.

Fiftycal: Though there would definitely be some welcome side effects of such a policy, I’ve got to say that the downside would greatly outweigh the upside.
