In Pittsfield Township, Michigan, near Ann Arbor, a passer-by saw another man forcing a woman into a van. He tried to intervene, but the man and woman drove off in the van, so the witness went to a nearby store and called the police to report the incident.
A few minutes later, the van pulled up beside the witness and the man driving began yelling at him. The witness got out of his car and promptly became a victim as the man punched him in the face. Two women, one of them the woman he had seen forced into the van, got out and began hitting and kicking the victim.
A passing motorist stopped his car, pulled a gun and demanded the trio stop beating the man, [Detective Lt. Steve] Heller said.
Police responded to several calls reporting a man holding people at gunpoint. Officers determined the man with a gun had a legitimate concealed weapons permit and was trying to help, Heller said.
Officers arrested an 18-year-old Ann Arbor man and two 19-year-old women. They were released pending charges.
The victim was not seriously injured.
