NFL Players & Handguns: ‘Solve the problem’
August 25th, 2009
Cornwell says it’s time to solve the problem of NFL players and guns
Should the NFL, the players’ union, or individual teams get involved in educating players about firearms laws and help them get opportunities to make sure they’re complying?
Obviously, I’m not in favor of banning gun ownership by NFL players like some idiots have suggested.

This strikes me as rather silly. Ball players are like anyone else, no? Why is this even a question? Are NFL players more likely to have guns than CPAs, or members of the United Garment Workers of America? Do gun owning CPAs, or UGWA members not require training and/or safe handling courses?
The kink in the equation is the “role model” folderal attached to pro athletes. Given that the NFL has a vested interest in looking after its franchise, that is, the continued glorification of its product, then maybe yeah, in order to placate the public fantasy, they should recommend to their gun owning players…
… the same kind of training anyone other citizen has access to – namely, NRA courses!
As for compliance, why treat them any different from any other gun owner? Screw up, you get smacked down. Lesson: don’t be stupid. Sheesh. Primadonnas.
