My AR is Back in Action

October 29th, 2009

Embarrassingly, Murdoc’s AR has been non-functional for some time. Last night I finally got things put back together. Here it is in its current configuration:

Murdoc's Black Gun

Murdoc's Black Gun

It started out as a DPMS Panther AP4 Carbine and I’ve made the following changes:

I’ve still got these to install:

I also sometimes use a generic forward vertical grip, a Versa-Pod bipod, and an MD2 LED Light/Laser from Pentagon Light. When I want to take longer shots, I slap an inexpensive Barska 40mm scope (not sure what model) on the rail.

I’ve still got to go function fire this thing and re-zero yet, so it’s not 100% ready to go. It’s certainly not the only gun in the cabinet, but I’ve been itching a bit since it went out of action this summer.

Does anyone else get to feeling a little antsy when guns are out of commission?

That’s why everyone should own multiple guns–in case one is out of service, you still have others that are ready for use. :-)

    A non-functioning gun is a club, n’est-pas?

My itches were caused by wondering when my M16 was going to take itself out of commission.

What I can’t stand (aside from untested boomsticks) is unsighted guns.

I’ve got a lightweight AR built up for the missus, but the MBUS rear sight is not zeroed. Drives me nuts.

What’s worse is that the EOTech 517 I want to put on the rifle currently is on (and zeroed to) MY personal HD AR. The EOTech XPS sight to replace the 517 is sitting on the bench, awaiting install and zero.

To get the wife’s AR up and running, I have to take mine out of commission. So, until I can find time to zero both at once, I have to cope with an untested AR.

C’mon man…no compass in the stock and thing which tells time?

Why a bayonet lug? With a 16″ barrel, the relative positions of the flash hider and bayonet lug are too far apart to allow mounting standard military bayonets. Do you have a bipod that mounts to the bayonet lug or something?

  7. Murdoc Says:

Yes, for use with a bipod.

And it just makes the whole thing scarier.

I’ve been trying to get a shoulder thing that goes up (one with a compass and this thing which tells time) but they’re so tightly regulated I’ll probably have to go through a gun show loophole to get one.

    I know the feeling.

I hate leaving my guns with the gunsmith.

It’s kind of like having a car that won’t run. You sunk a lot of money into that sucker, and it makes your stomach churny to just have it sitting there, useless.

I had that feeling with my M1A being jam-o-matic until I gave up and just accepted it. Then I moved onto other guns.

Also, it is annoying that the bayo rattles around at the ring on a sixteen inch barrel. Makes me want to get a whole new full length upper to remedy it =)
