Pistol Blows up in Marshall County Deputy’s Hand

December 18th, 2009

West Virginia:

The veteran officer was using a Glock 21 .45 caliber pistol with out of country ammunition at a shooting range outside of Moundsville, [Chief Deputy Kevin] Cecil said.

It’s believed the ammunition was bad, causing the receiver to blow apart in the sergeant’s hand.

Ouch. Link sent by a reader.

I thought Glocks blew up when too much lead from cast bullets builds up in the Octagonal barrel. Unless this stuff was super hot, the origin of the ammo doesn’t make much difference.

A squib would do it. Bullet stuck mid bore. pull the slide back, pull the trigger again, kaboom.

A squib mishandled would nuke ANY pistol, not just a GLOCK.

My G-20 went Kaboom in my hand on one of my reloads. The Winchester brass blew out at the unsupported area of the chamber and blasted the mag out(mag hit the floor and came apart), destroyed the trigger assembly and the mag release. Gave me quite the scare but after counting all my fingers the only injury was a blood blister from the mag release button. I dropped it off at the GlockMeister and he fixed it good as new. Not sure what I did wrong with the reload other then possible bad brass as a double load of powder would have done a lot more damage I would think. Picked up an aftermarket fully supported barrel to use with my reloads and have been good ever since.
