D.C. Gun Crackdown Meets Community Resistance

Police Ask Residents To Submit To Voluntary Searches

Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said the “safe homes initiative” is aimed at residents who want to cooperate with police. She gave the example of parents or grandparents who know or suspect their children have guns in the home.

So can someone call police and direct them to your home? Nice.

If weapons are recovered, they will be tested and destroyed if they are not found to be linked to any other crimes.

No thanks, officer.

I noted a similar program (but apparently without any amnesty) being run in Boston. Apparently, police officials there are “surprised by intense opposition from residents” and have delayed and scaled back the program. I mean, who would have ever guessed that citizens might not wholeheartedly embrace warrantless searches of their property?
