Crossbow Hunting in North Carolina

North Carolina Allows Crossbow Hunting But Requires Concealed Handgun Permit

This is odd to Murdoc:

State law requires that anyone buying or otherwise receiving a crossbow in North Carolina first obtain a pistol permit from the sheriff’s office in their county of residence or hold a valid concealed handgun permit.

From what I understand, this is not related to the new opportunity to hunt with crossbows in North Carolina but has always been a requirement of purchasing or receiving a crossbow.

What do concealed handguns or the permission to carry them have to do with crossbows?

Post Reconstruction era Jim Crow laws again, would be my guess.

They didn’t want blacks to have weapons, so they made a list of things that required a permit. Then only enforced the permit requirement on blacks and Republicans.

I’m sure they would have added long gun permits if they thought they could have gotten away with it.

The answer lies in NC’s permitting process. At some time in the past crosbows were classed as weapons requiring a permit to purchase, same as pistols. The permit issuing authority is still the county Sheriff. Because of how the concealed carry license law is written, anyone who possesses a cc license is exempt from having to seek a pistol purchase permit. Since it has always been a permit to purchase, you don’t need a permit to possess.
