Baltimore Shooting Homicide Map

Somehow found an interesting interactive map of homicides in Baltimore. It lets you specify criteria and compare the results.

Here is a snapshot of the shooting homicides in 2007:

Here is the map of white victims only:

See below for the rest.

Here are Hispanic victims:

And, finally, here are Black victims:

You can check out the map yourself at the Baltimore Sun.

Baltimore was rated the 12th most dangerous city in the US for 2007. A little cursory research shows that Blacks outnumber Whites in Baltimore by just over 2-to-1.

This sort of thing is sure to get some people all fired up about something or other. You can barely mention race without offending someone. But don't these results point to an obvious problem? I've never been to Baltimore and know virtually nothing of it's culture, demographics, or neighborhoods. I don't know how much gang-related or drug-related violence is present. I don't know what other factors help lead to these results. I don't even know how these results compare to other cities like Washington, New York, Detroit, or Chicago.

Really, the only thing I do know is that it's terribly sad.

UPDATE: Found that my original source was someone who copied a post from Alan Korwin's Page Nine.

Korwin gives demographics opposite of what I posted, writing that "whites outnumber blacks there by more than two to one (3.5MM to 1.6MM)." His totals must include the Baltimore metro area; the numbers I was looking at were just for the city of Baltimore. Given the scope of the map, my guess is that we aren't looking at a white majority here, though I don't know where the city limits are what area was included in the map's data.

UPDATE: More here.

And a commenter at Say Uncle (thanks for the link!) writes:

Except to say how EVIL and useless they are, my community (black) absolutely WILL NOT discuss guns. I’ve tried.

Finally, I've noticed that the permalinks at Page Nine are down. I emailed Alan Korwin about it and hopefully they'll be back in action soon. (It's not like ol' Murdoc hasn't had his own share of technical issues lately...)
