‘It’s a fluke accidental shooting’

Woman hugs off-duty Detroit police officer — and dies after his gun goes off

Bizarre story from the Motor City:

Miller, who would have turned 25 today, was fatally shot early Sunday morning while attending a party on Archdale in Detroit. Police reports say she was killed when an off-duty Detroit police officer’s pistol fired as she embraced him.

Police said that Miller hugged the officer — whose name has not been released — from behind as he was dancing, and the gun discharged.

The story is that the officer had a department-issued .40 S&W M&P in an inside-the-waistband holster. And it “went off” when Adaisha Miller hugged him from behind while he was dancing with his wife.

Sounds made up.

  1. I live in Detroit and they are saying it was a shoulder holster. She was shot through the lung and heart, so IWB doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The officer is on administrative leave. I will be interested to see how this develops.

  2. Seems to missing a lot of details. No way did a M&P “go off” from the pressure of a hug.

  3. How did an IWB holdter allow a round to strike her in the lungs and heart? My first thought was a shoulder holster

According to Stephens, the woman “embraced the officer from behind, causing the holstered weapon to accidently discharge.” The bullet punctured Miller’s lung and hit her heart, and she died at a hospital.

    1. Nice find. I was wondering how what was most likely a leg hit had killed her.

As Bram said: “Seems to be missing a lot of details.”

I’d add: “And the details we’ve got seem to be made up.”

      Just saying.

  4. Surprising outcome for sure. IWB wouldn’t seem to allow that to be possible. Perhaps not surprising police officers is the best strategy for avoiding these accidents.
