The 2010 pistol shooting championship season kicks off with the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) Area 6 Pistol Championship and once again Georgia-based firearms maker Glock has been named the overall match sponsor. The Area 6 region includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

This marks the 4th year that Glock, whose pistols are popular with many competing in the Production and Limited-10 divisions, will be the main sponsor of the match.

It runs April 16 through 18 at the South River Gun Club in Covington, Georgia. Around 325 shooter are expected to compete in six divisions.

Rifle Shooting Merit Badge

Incidentally, my son earned his Rifle Shooting merit badge this week while at Boy Scout camp.

He probably shoots straighter than Murdoc, now.

They wouldn’t let him keep his target, though. He tried to get it, but they said “no”. Bummer.

This spring the NRA Collegiate & Schools Program will be introducing a NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship that will be open to all levels of collegiate shooters.

This new championship will include NRA College Rifle Clubs, Varsity Rifle Teams, ROTC Teams, and independent shooters, for which there is currently no national championship.

“As a result of the new championship, we hope to see a boosted level of awareness toward collegiate shooting that will help foster rifle programs across the nation,” said Tori Croft, National Manager of NRA Collegiate & School Programs.

Purdue University will be the host of the 2010 NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship, which will be held April 8-11 at the Purdue University Armory.

The All Guard service rifle team won first place as High National Guard or Reserve Team and second overall in the Inter-Service Rifle Team Championship Match at the 48th annual Inter-Service Rifle Championships held here July 21-28.

More than 145 shooters from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Reserve and National Guard competed in the rifle championships…

During the Inter-Service Rifle Team Championship Match, each shooter fired 10 slow fire shots at the 200-yard line, 10 rapid fire shots at the 200-yard line, 10 rapid fire shots from the standing to the prone position at the 300-yard line, and 20 slow fire shots from the prone at the 600-yard line.

And the National Guardsmen won the 1000-meter competition for the third straight year.

VirtuSphere - Hamster Ball Plus VR

I got a heads up from VBS.TV about a video story they did on the VirtuSphere, a giant hamster ball-like input device for virtual reality simulations. I had posted about military testing of the VirtuSphere for training applications back in 2006 over at Murdoc Online but hadn’t heard anything about it for a while.

When I mentioned it to my son, he told me he had just seen a segment about it on television. I’ll have to take him on as a technical consultant or something.

Anyway, Murdoc’s not much for video games, but I can see playing some first-person shooter in one of these things.

Got an old TV? Don’t shoot it! That’s the word from federal wilderness officials. The people at the Bureau of Land Management in Utah’s west desert are worried some folks might want to use their old sets for target practice.

They warn it can cost up to $7,000 to clean up after a television set has been shot.
