Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships

December 8th, 2009

Cool:

This spring the NRA Collegiate & Schools Program will be introducing a NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship that will be open to all levels of collegiate shooters.

This new championship will include NRA College Rifle Clubs, Varsity Rifle Teams, ROTC Teams, and independent shooters, for which there is currently no national championship.

“As a result of the new championship, we hope to see a boosted level of awareness toward collegiate shooting that will help foster rifle programs across the nation,” said Tori Croft, National Manager of NRA Collegiate & School Programs.

Purdue University will be the host of the 2010 NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship, which will be held April 8-11 at the Purdue University Armory.

VirtuSphere - Hamster Ball Plus VR

VirtuSphere - Hamster Ball Plus VR

I got a heads up from VBS.TV about a video story they did on the VirtuSphere, a giant hamster ball-like input device for virtual reality simulations. I had posted about military testing of the VirtuSphere for training applications back in 2006 over at Murdoc Online but hadn’t heard anything about it for a while.

When I mentioned it to my son, he told me he had just seen a segment about it on television. I’ll have to take him on as a technical consultant or something.

Anyway, Murdoc’s not much for video games, but I can see playing some first-person shooter in one of these things.

Utah Officials Warn TV Viewers Not To Shoot Their Old TV Sets

July 2nd, 2009

Beware of Toxins:

Got an old TV? Don’t shoot it! That’s the word from federal wilderness officials. The people at the Bureau of Land Management in Utah’s west desert are worried some folks might want to use their old sets for target practice.

They warn it can cost up to $7,000 to clean up after a television set has been shot.

So I bought a .44 magnum it was solid steel cast
And in the blessed name of Elvis well I just let it blast
’Til my TV lay in pieces there at my feet
And they busted me for disturbin’ the almighty peace
Judge said “What you got in your defense son ?”
“Fifty-seven channels and nothin’ on”

PT Turn-Swing

PT Turn Swing™ Target by Action Target

PT Turn Swing™ Target by Action Target

This is what Murdoc needs for the back yard:

With the PT Turn-Swing™ you will enjoy the benefits of training on turning targets, even on the most remote and undeveloped ranges. Because the target is driven by 2 simple pull cables, no additional power of any kind is required.

In addition to the turning action, you can also use the PT Turn-Swing™ as a lateral swinging target just pull on the second control cable instead. No adjustment or reconfiguration is required to switch between turning and swinging, and both actions are spring loaded to return automatically to their original position.

For more challenging scenarios or to accommodate more shooters, up to 6 units can be linked together to function simultaneously from a single control point.

I haven’t priced these sorts of things, but $180 seems reasonable. Video at the site.

There is no literacy requirement for stupid

Uncle:

Some people built houses near the range and are surprised that ranges are noisy (note: if sound suppressors weren’t so heavily regulated, this wouldn’t be a problem). So, they try to shut it down. They lose. They do the logical thing and vandalize and destroy property.

What I find amusing is that if a bunch of us were to go and create fake/photoshopped images of vandalism and protesters, we’d make them look a lot more intelligent than they really are. It’s probably hard to effectively imitate this sort of thing.

Apparently the home of the range owner was spray-painted as well.
