Buyback Follies

February 25th, 2008

Gun Buyback Misfires

Oakland’s recent gun buyback was especially ridiculous. The police offered up to $250 for a gun “no questions asked, no ID required.” The first people in line? Two gun dealers from Reno with 60 cheap handguns. Fortunately the buyback did manage to get some guns off the street, too bad they were turned in by a bunch of senior citizens from an assisted living facility. Whew, the streets are safe at last.

Apparently, the Oakland PD now owes $170,000 in IOUs for the program.

In concept, gun buyback programs aren’t 100% totally worthless. But just about.

Good Stats to Know

Hunters spend more on their activity than the total revenues of McDonald’s ($23 billion vs. $20 billion).

More good stats over at the Gun Shots.

‘Before they pull the trigger’

February 24th, 2008

Here’s a letter to the editor of Chicago’s Daily Herald:

Concealed carry won’t bring peace

Once again, tragedy strikes and the NRA pops out of the woodwork — Give every impulsive, low self-esteemed, road raging hot shot a pistol and we’ll have peace on earth.

And this garbage about having safer streets when law-abiding citizens can carry weapons?

Murderers are usually law-abiding before they pull the trigger.

Familiarity with human nature is not an NRA strong-suit. Imagine the carnage at NIU if 20 or 30 armed and frightened students had opened fire.

No strawmen there, are there?

And we don’t have to imagine the carnage at NIU if only the killer had opened fire. Sadly, no imagination is necessary.

Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor

February 23rd, 2008

Something I didn’t follow up on enough at the SHOT Show is Hornady’s new 6.5mm Creedmoor:

Hornady 6.5mm Creedmoor

From Hornady:

The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to allow any shooter to compete at the highest level with factory-loaded ammunition. Built for match rifles, including the Tubb 2000 and DPMS LR Series, its case is slightly shorter than the 260 Remington, eliminating any “Cartridge Overall Length” issues when using 308 Winchester length magazines.

It’s going to run about $1.60 per round. Here are the numbers:

Steve Johnson points out a bunch of new Hornady stuff, and you can check out a video (including a section on the 6.5 Creedmoor) here.

Flush-faced Deputy

Deputy Fires Gun in Courthouse Restroom

Fargo police said an investigation determined that his weapon was discharged accidentally.

Authorities said he had hung the gun by its trigger guard, and the gun caught on the hook and discharged into the ceiling when he went to retrieve it.

Sharp as a Marble:

And no, the weapon wasn’t discharged accidentally, it was discharged negligently.

This reminds me of the post over at Rummel’s a while back about CCW and public restrooms.

Obama Blabbering

February 22nd, 2008

Obama
Say What?

He says he:

  1. Supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms,
  2. Thinks it doesn’t only apply to the militia, and
  3. Plans to use California gun control as a basis for legislation.

One of these three concepts is unlike the others.

(Hint: It’s #3.)

Survivalist Guns

The Poor Man’s Arsenal

Let’s say I can tell you about a basic three gun battery that will have you equipped to handle most any survival situation. Most of what we buy are things we want, not need, once we separate the wants from the needs, wise and frugal choices can be made with regard to survival firearms. The three firearms I suggest are low cost, reliable weapons that will serve you well when tshtf.

Check out his suggestions.

The Hawk Knife by Frost Cutlery

The Hawk by Frost Cutlery

I picked up a dozen of these from Smoky Mountain Knife Works when they were offered as their January Twelve Pack. Should make nice little gifts for friends and family.

February’s Twelve Pack is a dozen Zeppelin Linerlocks for $19.99.

Dogs

February 21st, 2008

James Rummel on man’s best friend:

My philosophy so far as dogs are concerned is that they function best as organic early warning systems. They don’t have hands, can’t use the phone to summon help, or use firearms to defend against violent attack by humans similarly equipped. Heck, the simple doorknob is beyond them! But they can alert me when someone crosses on to the property, and then I’ll take care of the rest.

Plus they’re furry and fun.

Go read the whole thing.
