‘Gun shows, then, are not the real issue’

Kevin notes an article on the “gun show loophole.”

Very much worth reading.

Even the Gun Mugs are sold out

Gun Mug -- SOLD OUT!

Gun Mug -- SOLD OUT!

Stock should be replenished next month or the month after, which is basically what the gun shops are telling me on anything I ask about…

CCW on Campus

A couple of items:

A measure to allow concealed weapons on South Dakota’s public universities has returned to the state Legislature.

University of Texas: After 30 minutes of heated debate Tuesday night, Student Government voted 31 to 6, passing a resolution against allowing students to carry concealed handguns on campus.

Nuisance

Indiana Supreme Court Allows Gary Gun Lawsuit to Proceed to Trial

In a very rare win for a city against a gun manufacturer, the Indiana Supreme Court has ruled that a lawsuit by the City of Gary can proceed to trial. These lawsuits have been uniformly rejected on various grounds, including standing. Yet, Gary with one of the nation’s highest homicide rates will be allowed to sue companies like Smith and Wesson, Beretta and Colt as well as gun dealers for the harm caused by their products. They are proceeding on a nuisance theory.

I hadn’t seen this, and in fact thought all this was behind us. Obviously, I was mistaken. Gary is the last of thirty municipal suits. All of the others have been defeated or withdrawn.

Black Market

My recent feature article in Shooting Sports Retailer, a rundown of some of the hottest cool AR accessories called “Black Market”, is up over at the SSR web site.

No images in the online version, though I notice that a few items that didn’t make the magazine version are up online. Sort of a director’s cut special extended edition. Check it out if interested.

Shooting Sports Retailer's Jan 2009 Issue

Shooting Sports Retailer's Jan 2009 Issue

One thing I’ll say right away is: I realize that I didn’t include each and every cool AR accessory. Duh. Due to space limitations, entire categories (parts and tools, for instance) had to be left out. Within each category that remained, a decent range of options had to be represented, and lots of great products that I know of had to be left off the list. There were a lot of hard choices. Even more, there are, no doubt, many, many more great products that I haven’t even heard of out there.

If you’ve got a favorite AR accessory that isn’t in my rundown, be sure to let me know.

Extra Little Plug Time: If your favorite gun shop doesn’t get Shooting Sports Retailer, suggest that they give it a try. It’s a great trade mag aiming for independent firearms and outdoors retailers. It’s got a great bunch of writers churning out a bunch of great articles and commentary every issue. (Plus me!)

A new section of the magazine, The Tactical Retailer, debuted a few months back and is off to a great start. It’s focused, of course, on tactical guns and gear, with a special emphasis on helping shop owners learn about and know how to sell product in this growing segment of the market.

Of course, we’ve all seen that the stuff sells itself depending on the elections…

Makes Sense, so it Won’t Happen

Jeff Soyer on the National CCW Reciprocity Bill

Criminals already have national illegal concealed carry reciprocity on their side.

It’s good in every state, 24/7/365. No permit needed.

First Obama, now Harriet

Obama didn’t like it when the press asked him a question. He called it “getting grilled.”

A blogger called Harriet posted all sorts of inaccurate and uninformed blather about AK-47s. Someone apparently called her on it, so she responded like an adult:

I’ve been harassed by a commentor.
So, I’ve had to pull the story.

Luckily, it’s not so easy to pull a stunt like pulling a story. Currently, the Google cache has the goods.

Pretty astounding stuff, really, if the definition of astounding is “uninformed.”

UPDATE: Now Harriet apparently doesn’t even want to say that she was harassed and pulled the story. She took down the notice and replaced it with a big bold “HAVE A GREAT DAY!”

That’s not a {picture of a} knife…

Steve on the internet knife patrol.

And more at Robb’s.

Plus, recall that Place Setting for Eight Violent Criminals.

Sheesh.

The British called – They want their guns back!

A British citizen says “This isn’t about fox hunting. This is about liberty…”

The Tony Martin case is mentioned, of course. The reporter talks to Martin.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Better never to let them [guns] go.

Indeed.

Kearney Repeals Citywide Ban On Concealed Handguns

Nebraska:

Acknowledging state law trumps a local ordinance, the Kearney City Council has repealed the city’s 51-year-old total ban on carrying concealed firearms.

The council’s 4-1 vote came in the wake of an opinion issued by Attorney General Jon Bruning which said cities and towns cannot effectively override a 2007 statute which allows qualified Nebraskans to carry concealed handguns.

Excellent news! (via Uncle)

Give me that knife

James Rummel:

It seems that the cops in the UK are looking at profiles in Facebook and other popular Internet sites. If they see a picture of someone posing with a knife, a picture taken in a public place, then they go arrest the miscreant.

My guess is that the idea of posing with a (gasp!) knife in a public place is only cool enough to put on your Facebook because it’s forbidden.

What if you photoshop a knife into a picture of you on the street in London?
