Anti-Gun Outdoor Writer to Run for NRA Board
Sebastian on Pat Wray:
Needless to say, he'd be a long shot.
The Russian firm Izhmash (Izhevsk Mechanical Works) holds the patents for the AK-47, and is having little success in trying to force companies in Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Israel, China and the United States to pay licensing fees for the AK-47s they produce.
Gee. Ya think?
Romanian-built AK clone.
Louisville or Bust...preferably Louisville
I'm headed down to the 2nd Amendment Blog Bash at the NRA Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, today. Looking forward to meeting a bunch of great folks. And even some gun bloggers if I have time.
Hah Hah! Sometimes I crack myself up.
Anyway. I'll be on the road for a while today but I've got a couple things lined up to publish and I'll post a few things here and there as time allows.
I'm not able to stay for the weekend, but it's going to be great to meet so many of the bloggers I read and link to face to face.
A special note in case you've missed it: No guns will be allowed in to the Celebration of American Values banquet Saturday evening. Kentucky honors all concealed carry permits from other states and the NRA has no problems, but the Secret Service (guarding John McCain, who will be speaking) is a bit touchy about such things. Some have a beef with this, though I guess I'm not getting too worked up about it. Of course, I will have left town by then so it affects me not.
If you're going to be in Louisville: See you there!
A lot of gun owners are up in arms over this: Anti-gun crusader Bloomberg salutes Wal-Mart on new tough sales policy
I don't agree with their policy and I sure don't agree with them siding with the anti-gun mayors. But I also don't personally care all that much. The only thing I've bought at Walmart in the past couple of years is .22 ammo. I'll get that elsewhere from now on.
A big round-up of links at Rustmeister's Alehouse.
UPDATE: Caleb:
The other thing that really upsets me about this is that it puts a lot of rural gun owners in a bind - thanks to Wal-Mart’s effectiveness at putting mom-and-pop shops out of business, many rural gun owners don’t have a lot of options for places to purchase their ammo from
As I pointed out in January, the National Shooting Sports Foundation's 2008 Shooting Sports Summit begins on June 23rd in Colorado Springs, CO. There was little info available at the time.
At the SHOT Show in February, I asked the folks at the big NSSF booth about the Summit, and they were basically clueless about it. They knew it was in June, they knew it was in Colorado Springs, and they knew that former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was the keynote speaker. And that was all that they knew.
On Friday I got an email on the event, and details seem to be filling in. They've got a big list of speakers for signature and breakout sessions.
I lived in Colorado Springs for seven years and I'm always looking for an excuse to get back. But after deciding to make the Second Amendment Blog Bash and NRA Annual Meeting a priority, I doubt that I've got the time and money for another trip this summer. And it ain't terribly cheap.
More spent on shooting sports than on golf
In case you missed the gunbloggers covering this:
Firearm and hunting gear sales grew 4.1% in 2006, to $3.7 billion, to reach the number two spot in national athletic and sporting goods sales. This forced golf, at $3.66 billion, down into third place. Only exercise equipment had bigger sales than firearms/hunting gear.
You probably didn't hear about that on the evening news.
And I wonder how they count dollars spent on this for their 222mm flash hider or muzzle brake:
The Bloom Automatic Golf Ball Launcher easily attaches in seconds to your standard Yugo SKS 59/66, AR-15, FAL, CETME/G3, and MAS 49/56. Other rifles with a 22mm flash hider or muzzle brake will work as well.
See this article at Surplus Rifles for more on the Bloom Automatic Golf Ball Launcher.

Rustmeister: Ronnie G. Barrett, Man of Principle
Here is the letter Mr. Barrett sent to the chief of the Honolulu Police Department in response to said department's push to ban the .50 caliber rifle.
Money (as in $$$) quote from the letter:
If Hawaii or any state bans the sale of the .50-caliber rifle, we will immediately stop the sale and service of all Barrett products to that state’s government agencies.
Kim du Toit says Tit For Tat.
There are so many crimes and drive-by gangland shootings with .50 caliber weapons, you know. And something needs to be done about the rising numbers of accidental deaths from .50 caliber mishaps in the home.
It's for the kids.
Gun Blogger Rendezvous - October in Reno
The third annual Gun Blogger Rendezvous, once again at Circus Circus in Reno, NV, begins with an informal social gathering Thursday evening (the 9th) and officially ends with breakfast Sunday morning (the 12th), though the hospitality room will be open Sunday evening, too.
Lots of fun in between.
Scheduling conflicts have kept Murdoc from both of the first two GBRs, and it's too early to commit to this one. But I'd sure like to. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
SHOT: Cerberus NOT to Gobble Up HK?
On Saturday I noted a rumor that there could be a SHOT Show announcement that Cerberus Capital Management is going to acquire Heckler & Koch.
But I haven't heard another peep about it, and today is the last day of the show.
From the Department of Verify This Rumor Before Going Completely Apeshit: CERBERUS TO MAKE MOVES ON HK
In an announcement to be made at SHOT ‘08, HK will very likely be purchased by Cerberus, the holdings company that is notably the recent purchaser of Remington, DPMS, Cobb, Bushmaster, Marlin and your mom.
Via SayUncle, who has a his own take on the possibility which is probably shared by many.
And, as noted in the comments:
Didn’t they just buy Chrysler too? I think an HK should be standard equipment on any car sold in the Detroit area.
